The Builder Partnerships team wishes to extend its deepest condolences to the family of Thomas Buffington, founder and chairman of Buffington Homebuilding Group, who passed away January 8 at his home in Austin, Texas.
Tom had been a close friend of Chuck Shinn's since Tom served as president of NPC Austin-Central Texas in the early 80s. In 1987, he started his own company, Buffington Homes.
In 1996, Tom joined three national home builders to form The Fortress Group, a publicly traded holding company that acquired and consolidated local and regional home building companies. Tom served as the chief operating officer and was on the board of directors of the Fortress Group until his retirement in 1999.
Tom mastered many things in his lifetime, but retirement was not one of them. In 2001, he co-founded Buffington Capital Holdings to acquire and develop property for master-planned communities in central Texas. In 2007, he re-entered home building in Austin by restarting Buffington Homes; in 2010, he started Buffington Homes of Arkansas with partners Mike Lamberth and Clay Carlton.
“Tom was a leader in the home building industry for more than then 40 years as the industry matured from a cottage industry to the national economic engine that it is today,” Chuck Shinn said. “We will miss his vision and his spirit and, most of all, his friendship. His family can be proud of the legacy of excellence he leaves behind. It is one that all home builders would do well to emulate.”
